April 7th, 2010 -- When the CASCOR Canadian Tire Series rolled into London, ON at the Delaware Speedway, the reining Can-Am Late Model Series champion and runner up picked up right where they left off. Brent Sweet would lead the field to the green flag along side Mike Husby.
Brent Sweet would jump out to the early lead while the action heated up at the drop of the green flag. Bertus De Jong suffered a minor connection problem, disappearing for about 5 seconds before the start finish line, coming to the green flag for the start of the race.
When De Jong reappeared the #59 of Josh Tew had already turned De Jong around, collecting the #15 of Johnny Williams as well in the mess. Josh Tew would retire a few laps later, with a torn up car and a broken motor. But the mess on the front stretch was not enough to bring out a caution flag as the field raced on.
Brent Sweet would pull out to a 1.5 second lead over Mike Husby and the rest of the field by lap 8. Sweet would hold onto the lead until lap 28, handing the lead over to Mike Husby.
The first caution of the night would come out on lap 35 for a self spinning Matt Trace in turn four. The top 5 cars would come down pit road for four tires and fuel. Mike Husby would win the race off pit road ahead of Brent Sweet, Will Goshen, Tyler Tucker and Andrew Hayes. The lapped cars would make their way down pit road for service one lap after the leaders had pitted.
Mike Husby would lead the field back to green on lap 41. The caution would come out for the second time of the night when Johnny Williams spun out coming off of turn four on lap 52. Husby, Tyler Tucker and Andrew Hayes would elect to come down pit road under this caution, once again for 4 tires and fuel. Brent Sweet would stop as well the second time by with Aaron Levin and Bertus De Jong.
Will Goshen would stay out under this caution and took over the lead on the restart. Goshen would lead the field back to green on lap 58.
Tyler Tucker wanting the lead on the restart, would dive under Goshen going into turn three, taking over the lead at the start/finish line. But Goshen, getting a little too antsy, would punt Tucker out of the lead in turn one spinning Tucker around. This would bring out the third caution of the night on lap 59.
Will Goshen would have to line up at the end of the longest line for causing the caution and Mike Husby would relinquish the lead. Husby would lead Brent Sweet, Andrew Hayes, Tyler Tucker and Will Goshen back to green with 41 laps to go.
Bertus De Jong looking to get around Aaron Levin on the restart, got into the back of Levin going into turn three. But the caution would not waive until the front straightaway, when (it appeared) Levin brake checked De Jong, finally bringing out the caution with 40 laps to go.
The leaders would stay out and Mike Husby would lead the field back to green with 34 laps to go. Andrew Hayes would attempt to pass Brent Sweet on the restart but would not be able to clear Sweet and dropped back into 3rd position.
Will Goshen and Tyler Tucker would get by Hayes on lap 82 dropping Hayes back to fifth. The lead would change hands on lap 88, while the leaders of Mike Husby and Brent Sweet tried getting around the lapped car of Aaron Levin. Husby would make slight contact with Levin twice, while Brent Sweet was able to get by with ease and took over the lead. Husby would fall 2.66 seconds off of Brent Sweet's pace as a result.
Meanwhile, Will Goshen and Tyler Tucker battled it out for third. Tucker would pressure Goshen until lap 98, when Tucker would slip by Goshen for 3rd.
Brent Sweet would pull away and held on to win the Delaware 100. Husby Finishes 2nd, Tucker 3rd, Goshen 4th and Andrew Hayes would round out the top 5.
With an exciting start to the season, the Canadian Tire Series looks to excite drivers and fans all year long. Brent Sweet and Mike Husby are tied for the points lead after race #1 and look to be championship contenders. Will Goshen (2009 Canadian Tire Series ROTY) showing some muscle this year, looks closer than ever to winning his first Canadian Tire Series race.
Can someone pull off an upset victory at Mosport? Will the battle continue between Brent Sweet and Mike Husby? Find out next time as the Canadian Tire Series makes its next stop at the Mosport International Speedway on April 20th, 2010 for the Dickies 100!
