May 19th, 2010 -- The Canadian Tire Series returned to road racing
action only this time closer to the west coast in Edmonton Alberta
Canada. Andrew Hayes was the most recent winner on the streets of
Toronto, but would he be able to make it two in a row?
Mike Husby and Brent Sweet led the field to the green flag at the Edmonton Street course. Andrew Hayes took the lead going into turn 1 when the green flag dropped and pulled away from the rest of the field.
The caution would fly for the first time when Pete Engelmanas driving for BSEnterprises #5 car flipped over in turn 7. Engelmanas would have to take his car to the garage and would not continue.
Several cars came down pit road under the caution for tires and fuel. Andrew Hayes and Mike Husby were the only two cars that would stay out under this caution.
Brent Sweet who started on the outside of the front row dropped out of the server at the start of the race. Sweet would return to the race late in the going and came back to finish 4th.
Hayes would lead the field back to green on lap 6. The battle for 2nd started to heat up between Frankie Stickley, Mike Husby and Will Goshen, when once again an accident occurred in turn 7, lap seven, between teammates. Goshen attempting to make a pass under Mike Husby slid up into Husby turning him around in turn 7. Husby would end up losing the use of 2nd gear for the remainder of the event.
Most of the leaders would make their way down pit road as Will Goshen would stay out. Goshen would lead the field back to green on lap 10.
Frankie Stickley took over the lead exiting turn 1 on the restart and held on to the lead until green flag pit stops started. While pitting for the final time under green, Stickley was entering the pits as the caution flag flew. Ben Althen hit the wall on the front straightaway dropping debris all over the track to bring out the caution.
Stickley would have to drop to the end of the longest line as a result of pitting under the caution flag.
Mike Husby led the field back to green as Andrew Hayes and Will Goshen were able to slip by Husby by the exit of turn 1. Unfortunate connection problems caused Mike Husby to fall 1 lap down late in the race dropping him to 6th place in the finishing order.
But the race for the lead was about to heat up between Hayes, Goshen and Stickley. Hayes and Stickley made slight contact in turn 1, but not enough to cause anyone to wreck. Stickley would return the favor in turns 10 and 11, turning Hayes around. Stickley would then run down Goshen on lap 29 to take over the lead, and never looked back.
Stickley wins the Canadian Tire 100. Will Goshen finishes 2nd, Hayes 3rd, Sweet 4th and Josh S would round out the top 5.
After five races so far in the 2010 Canadian Tire Series season, Andrew Hayes leads Will Goshen by 10 points. The Canadian Tire Series continues the west coast swing next week, as the series heads to the Sun Valley Speedway for the A&W Cruisin the Dub 150!
