May 12th, 2010 -- The CASCOR Canadian Tire Series headed to Toronto, ON for the first time in series history. Who would end up the victor at the end of the event?
Andrew Hayes would inherit the pole position when Tyler Tucker was unable to get his electrical issues fixed for the start of the race. Mike Husby would start outside the front row.
Hayes would take the lead in turn 1 as the majority of the field would take the inside line going into the first corner. Mike Husby was unable to turn his car down to the bottom of the corner soon enough and would drop back to 6th from his 2nd place starting position.
Hayes would go on to lead flag to flag and capture his first Canadian Tire Series victory along with his first CASCOR points paying victory. Will Goshen finishes 2nd, Mike Husby 3rd, Pete Engelmanas 4th and Tyler Tucker would get back out on track later in the race, rounding out the top 5.
“Finally! I finally got my first NR2003 win and it’s been a long time coming! Hopefully we can carry this momentum with us throughout the rest of the season and maybe even get our first oval win sometime this year.” – Hayes said in his post race interview.
Hayes also noted he only had 2nd and 4th gear left as he pulled away from the rest of the field over the course of the event. A scary moment late in the race saw Hayes spin in turn 6 as he lost about 30 seconds of time repairing a flat tire.
Hayes now pulls out to a 15 point lead over Will Goshen after 4 of 13 events and looks to be a strong contender for wins and the championship for the rest of the season.
The Canadian Tire Series heads west for the first of 3 west coast swing races at the Rexall Edmonton Indy Street course. Who will win? Find out next week May 18th, 2010!
