STICKLEY WINS ICEBREAKER @ THOMPSON

April 7th, 2010 --
As the CASCOR Modified Tour rolled into Thompson, Will Goshen worked to prove that winning at Bowman Gray wasn’t just a fluke, and started on the pole along side Brent Sweet.

Will Goshen would pull away from the field early on as the rest of the pack raced hard for 2nd position. The caution would fly for the first time when Johnny Williams and Pete Engelmanas got together in turn three on lap 12.

Brent Sweet and Johnny Williams would take this opportunity to pit under caution for tires and fuel.

Will Goshen would lead Matt Trace, Frankie Stickley, Mike Husby and Brent Sweet (the top 5) back to green on lap 18. The caution would immediately come out once again when Johnny Williams got into the back of Brent Sweet in turn 1, Williams would retire from the race as a result. Brent Sweet would once again come down pit road, this time for repairs and 4 fresh tires.

Will Goshen would once again lead the field back to green on lap 25. The caution would waive for the 3rd time of the night, when Pete Engelmanas and Matt Trace got together off of turn four on lap 34. Frankie Stickley and Tyler Tucker would pit for fuel only, on the 1 to go (before the green flag) signal and would line up at the back of the field for the restart.

Goshen would once again lead Pete Engelmanas, Matt Trace, Brent Sweet and Mike Husby back to green on lap 40. The action got heated back in the pack soon after the restart with Husby and Stickley making slight contact off of turn two. Husby would drive his car into turn 3 too hard, spinning himself around, but would not bring out a caution.

The caution would eventually waive when Matt Trace got into the back of Brent Sweet in turn one, spinning Sweet out on lap 43. Trace’s car would end up rolling over 4 times and back on all 4 wheels. Matt Trace would be able to continue on.

Will Goshen would lead, Pete Engelmanas, Brent Sweet, Tyler Tucker and Matt Trace down pit road, while Frankie Stickley and Mike Husby would stay out to gain track position.

Stickley would lead Husby, Engelmanas, Goshen and Sweet back to green with 52 laps to go. But the caution would fly once again after a long green flag run when Tyler Tucker would turn his “good friend” Matt Trace around in turn two with 26 laps to go.

Frankie Stickley, Mike Husby and Brent Sweet would pit for fresh tires with 25 laps to go under the caution flag. Pete Engelmanas along with everyone else would stay out, with Engelmanas inheriting the lead for the restart.

Engelmanas would lead Will Goshen, Matt Trace, Frankie Stickley and Mike Husby back to the green flag with 20 laps to go. With patience and laps starting wear thin, Stickley would make quick work of Matt Trace getting by him in turn 3. Husby would attempt to follow Stickley thru, but would end up getting together with Trace off of turn 2 the following lap, bringing the caution out again with 19 laps to go.

CASCOR officials and both drivers agreed it was a racing deal and neither driver was penalized for the incident.

Engelmanas would once again lead the field back to green with 13 laps to go. Engelmanas would get a big jump on the restart and pull away from 2nd place Will Goshen.

Stickley would get by Goshen quickly as well, with a chance to chase down leader, Pete Engelmanas. Will Goshen would drop to 5th a few short laps after the restart, while Stickley finally caught Engelmanas with 9 laps to go. Stickley would take the lead from Engelmanas with 8 laps to go and never look back.

But the battle for 2nd heated up with drivers blocking and racing hard for position until Mike Husby turned Engelmanas around coming off of turn four with 5 laps to go.

Stickley would win the race under caution. Sweet finishes 2nd, Tucker 3rd, Engelmanas 4th and Will Goshen would round out the top 5.

The CASCOR Modified Tour has not disappointed the fans to start off the season. With beating and banging in almost every turn, and a never give up attitude, the Modified Tour drivers have produced some of the best racing in CASCOR.
